One of our long-term holdings, Desert Palace Casino Resort, makes monthly donations to various charities and social projects in the Upington area. We really liked the way this one was structured because of the impact it made on the organisation. Radio Riverside, a community radio station based in Upington received a grant to upgrade their studio and broadcast facilities on condition that they rent or buy better premises (their existing broadcast centre was a tiny office within the Upington Fire Department). In October 2012, Desert Palace Casino made a contribution of R216,000 to the community station which was used as a deposit to purchase bigger premises for the station.
